OPINION: How BBNAIJA 2017 saved Nigerians from depression, anxiety

Despite criticisms that greeted BBNAIJA 2017 from Nigerians both within and outside the country about its moral implications to Nigeria’s value system, some people believe that the show brought fame to Nigeria among the other African countries. In a message sent to NAIJ.com, Abdulrofiu Muhammed Temitayo explains why the show reduced depression and anxiety among Nigeria, especially at the time the country’s economy was in recession. Seth J. Gillihan wrote in a piece that, multiple research studies have supported the positive mood attenuation hypothesis. When we're depressed, positive things do less to lift our spirits. However, one of the well-supported cognitive behavioural treatments for depression - behavioral activation, relies on the mood-lifting effects of meaningful and enjoyable activities. “One of the most common symptoms of depression is anhedonia, the lack of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. If you've been depressed, you probably recognize the experience of not looking forward to anything, even activities you used to enjoy. Even basic pleasures like food and sex may have lost their allure".
BBN
Imagine this is not the first of its kind but what gave much dust in the air was that the show was moved from soil of the Green White Green to Rainbow Nation. Housemates were Uriel, Kemen, CocoIce, Bally,Marvis, ThinTallTony,Gifty, Soma, Bisola, Miyonse , Efe , and Tboss among others. As God would have it, in a credit moment of the ride to Warri-boy under the wave of 'Based On Logistics '; Efe Ejeba follow by well talented lady Abisola Ayeola known as Bisola taking her campaign to London to promote girl child education and the second runner up Tokunbo Idowu; I named her ‘myladytboss’. Asked why? I love those individuals who stand and keep actions brazing, it won't kill the whole life dulling. I beg your pardon if you disagree. Life isn't beautiful if you don't get your nerves hitching. Illustration to this, even God left Satan to misled human; imagine this. Even Easter won't be celebrated if Judas doesn't stand in the lane of Jesus and also the whole city then went against the name of Muhammad. Victory is all for the good ones like God over Satan, Jesus came on top of everything including Judas in person, Muhammad floored the city and the city of Mecca came under him. Before the premonitory of Bbnaija, is there depression? YES, though Nigeria was on top of index in terms of World Happiest list but due to increase in depression, suicide, violence, the rank dropped. During the show, not much to discredit the basis of depression in the viewers most especially looking at the Dr Orji Allwell, Taiwo Momoh, Emeralds and Adesoji Adediran suicidal death. From observations, I could clinch it that all these individuals weren't watching the reality show like the doctor he won't find time to do so likewise is the two businesswomen and also the LAUTECH guy who hanged himself inside the room after his friends were out to take class. Bbnaija 2017 reduced the number of depressed people certainly from the findings I did and culled from different social media helping the wave of the time more inciting and discursive in different places up to political analysis bending and excusing their moment with 'who will be evicted next' or ' I want Efe to win the game No No No it is Bisola my girl why can you say that when Tboss is the right way to pick the money'. It was very intense. How does this work if the positive attenuation hypothesis is correct? A new research study revisited this hypothesis in a sample of young adults the authors pointed out that most studies showing positive mood attenuation in depression were done in the lab and used positive stimuli of questionable relevance to real life: viewing positive events, happy facial expressions, amusing videos or receiving small monetary rewards. Analysis to it is that people with higher levels of depression got a significant boost in their moods from positive events. READ ALSO: 17-old-sick teenager ‘detained’ by Nigerian govt hospital for inability to pay medical bills Also interpersonal events had greatest impact on mood. Also Depression was linked with expecting fewer positive events. And looking forward to positive events the next day lifted mood among people who are depressed. With all these analyses we could see how Bbnaija had help people to shun depression. “Anywhere you have a recession, suicide is typically the fallout. And in our society where people cope with a drop in purchasing power, where there are no jobs, where those who have jobs cannot afford basic things like food, clothing, and shelter, thoughts 'life is worthless', thoughts of hopeless and loss of faith might set in. And where these factors are available, depression is present ". "Suicide does not just occur. It takes a prolonged period of time to set in and to mature. When an individual is depressed, they are very vulnerable to suicide “says Acting Chief Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Yaba, Dr Richard Ademola Adebayo. Primary Health care should stand for Nigerians in need, identification and management of depressive disorders, non-governmental organizations and religious organizations should stop telling their congregation that without money that's no life and should indoctrinate in them if there's life there will be certainly be money any matter the circumstances they may be facing as asserted by Lawani Ambios. "Many people mistakenly believe that depression is defined as a weakness of character or mere sadness. But depression is a complex disorder that has psychological, social, and biological origins. Depression is a mental illness that can be treated in multiple ways, including medication and psychotherapy, and it should not be considered normal unhappiness or simply ignored. "Luckily, depression is a treatable disorder, but antidepressants alone are not typically enough. While these drugs have the ability to alter brain chemistry and fix deep-rooted biological problems, the treatment for depression may also include psychotherapy. The solution to depressing is not as easy as popping a pill, which may take as long as six weeks to kick in. Talk-therapy along with medication is often added to the treatment process". "Depression is a serious health condition, and no one chooses to be depressed. People mistakenly think that depression is merely a result of a person wallowing in their grief or sadness and can be cured by thinking positively and making a change in one’s attitude. "Depression is not a sign of weakness, laziness, or self-pity. It is a medical condition, arising from errors in brain chemistry, function, and structure due to environmental or biological factors. "Depression is more than the occasional sad thought or unhappiness due to a death, breakup, or disappointment; although these events can lead to depression. Everyone experiences highs and lows in their lifetimes, but depression doesn’t always happen due to a specific negative event. "Depression is marked by unexplained periods of hopelessness, sadness, lethargy, and suicidal tendencies. These episodes last for prolonged periods and can come suddenly and inexplicably, even when things in life appear positive". "Antidepressants work by changing brain chemistry and alleviating mood disorders. The thought of altering your brain chemistry can seem scary, but antidepressants are designed to change only certain chemicals in the brain. Antidepressants affect the symptoms of depression, and do not actually change your personality. In fact, most people who suffer from depression describe it as an alteration in their normal mood. Most people who take antidepressants finally begin to feel like themselves again, rather than feeling like a different person. It’s a common misconception that discussing depression merely reinforces destructive feelings and keeps a person focused on the negative. However, being alone with your thoughts is much more harmful. Having a supportive, reliable, and non-judgmental listener is critical in the treatment of depression? READ ALSO: Tears of joy as FG release names of girls freed from Boko Haram, one of the girls has her leg amputated Depression is not only a serious illness, it is also one shrouded in misconceptions. A major roadblock that keeps people from getting help are the myths around therapy and medication, two of the most common ways to treat depression. There are more therapy options than those two, though. Other therapies include: medication, psychotherapy, alternative therapies, lifestyle changes, medical procedures and combination therapy as Garry Staranchuk gave a powerful analysis of depression.

Femi Kuti breaks World Saxophone record

Femi Kuti
Femi Kuti has broken the World record for the longest single note held on a saxophone.
He attained the feat on Sunday at the New Africa Shrine as shared by his sister, Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti on her Instagram page @yenikuti;
“This evening 7th May at the New Africa Shrine, Femi Kuti broke the world record for the longest single note on a saxophone note set in 1997 by Kenny G.
The record stood at 45mins 37 seconds….Femi did 46mins 38seconds!! Give it up, we have a world champ.
This was witnessed by a large audience that included Sen. Ben Murray-Bruce, the deputy high commissioners of Netherlands and The United Kingdom.“
The record was previously first set in December, 1997 by legendary saxophonist Kenny G when he held an E-Flat for over 45 minutes.
Kenny G was reported to have used a technique called Circular Breathing, which keeps a steady stream of air flowing through the saxophone even as the player breathes.
For Femi Kuti, it is unclear yet what technique he used or even, the member of the sax family he used to achieve the massive feat.
He started playing the sax when he was 15 and joined his father’s band “The Egypt 80.”
He later formed his own band, “Positive Force’’ in the late 80s.
Femi, four-time Grammy award nominee, is skilled on other musical instruments including the trumpet and the piano.
According to media reports, Femi awaits an official recognition by the Guinness World Record.

200 feared dead in two migrant shipwrecks off Libya coast

200 feared dead in two migrant shipwrecks off Libya coast

The bodies of illegal immigrant lie dead on the shore

Almost 200 people are feared to have died in two Mediterranean Sea migrant shipwrecks during the weekend, according to reports on Monday.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Libya said that seven people were rescued off the north-western city of Zawiya, and one of them said 113 others were missing.
The information was posted on Twitter and confirmed by an IOM Spokesman in Rome, Flavio Di Giacomo.
Separately, 80 people died on Saturday after the rubber dinghy they were travelling on overturned, according to the ANSA news agency, which sourced its report from survivors’ accounts to Italian prosecutors.
The sea channel between Italy and Libya is the world’s busiest and most dangerous sea migration route.
More than 6,600 people were rescued there between Friday and Sunday.
On Sunday, the Head of the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR, Filippo Grandi, said more than 1,150 people died or went missing since the start of the year in sea crossings to Europe.
Grandi added that the mortality rate on the Libya-Italy route was one in 35.
He praised efforts by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), noting they had carried out one third of rescue operations since January 1, and renewed calls for EU authorities to open legal migration channels to spare people from dangerous sea journeys.
NGO involvement in sea rescues has become controversial since an Italian prosecutor accused them of acting in cahoots with Libyan people smugglers.
The prosecutor says he has suspicions but no proof; the NGOs have rejected all charges.

Evicted housemates Efe beat 11 other contenders to clinch the coveted prize, having surmounted all the hurdles and polled a whopping 57.61 er cent of the overall votes. Bisola, who became the first runner up polled 18.54 per cent of the vote, while Tboss scored 13.60 per cent to emerge the second runner up; Debie-Rise 8.78 per cent, third runner up while Marvis scored 1.47 per cent. Efe was given a brand new Kia Sorento SUV and N25 million cash prize. God will bless you abundantly. You’ve taken a common Warri boy and you made him a star. So thank you Africa, thank you Nigeria. For lighting up a life,” he wrote on his Instagram page yesterday. The show, which lasted for 11 weeks, was aimed at identifying, nurturing, and promoting young talent to a wide range of viewers which cut across the African continent. After a 10 year hiatus, the show was repackaged to give more Nigerian youths the opportunity to showcase their talent to the world. This year’s edition was hosted by former Big Brother Nigeria housemate, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu. Speaking on the grand finale, Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria, John Ugbe said, “We are particularly excited about the fresh talent the Big Brother Naija platform has birthed. The buzz generated by the show has demonstrated its success as a platform that seeks to create stars and promote the spirit of entrepreneurship of the Nigerian youth. We commend all the housemates for their excellent showing, endurance and determination.” Citing the fame and fortune that the BBNaija platform provides, Ugbe further urged all the housemates to take a cue from the positive examples of past housemates such as Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Gideon Okeke, Katung Aduwak among others, in carving a niche for themselves in Nigeria’s evolving entertainment industry. There were other wins for the night. TBoss won the least time in all Payporte games, while Bisola carted away the prize for having the best One campaign presentation for the education of the girl-child. TBoss was presented with a N500, 000 cheque and Bisola will join the One Campaign team in New York City for the girl-child education at the United Nations. High point of the grand finale was musical performances by Tiwa Savage, Emmy Gee featuring AB Crazy and Tuface Idibia. Also, the evicted housemates who watched the show live at a viewing centre, in Ikeja, spiced up the night with their performances.

Presidency of Nigeria belongs to the north whether Buhari lives or dies

THE RESURRECTION OF CORPSOCRACY by Fani – Kayode

The day before yesterday we were told by the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, that her husband was not as ill as most of us believed and that despite his obvious challenges he has continued to “carry out his responsibilities”.

On the same day the media went to great lengths to convince us, without providing any pictures, that the President had resumed work and that he had had a series of fruitful and productive meetings with his Minister of Justice and the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) respectively. They assured us that he would definately preside over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which was scheduled to hold the following day. All of these assertions proved to be false. Buhari has now missed his FOURTH Federal Ececutive Council meeting in a row due to his chronic and debilitating ill health. Whoever is holding this poor, frail, sick and elderly man to ransom and keeping him in the Presidential Villa, probably against his will, is wicked and ungodly and he or she is committing a grave sin against God and the Nigerian people. It is clear that the President is no longer fit to govern. It is obvious that his time is almost up. It is self-evident that for him the bell is tolling. It is incontrivertable that those around him have held him captive and are indulging in what I once described in an essay that I wrote seven years during the last days of President Umaru Yar’adua as “corpsocracy”. The essay was titled ”Corpocracy: A Gift From Umaru To The Modern World”. Simply put corpsocracy means the rulership of the living by the dead. It is the art of hiding a walking corpse, a comatose zombie or what some have described as the “living dead” in a cupboard in the Presidential Villa, telling the world that it is hale and hearty and then ruling and running the country in its name. This is what happened during Yar’adua’s last four months on earth whilst he still had one foot in the land of the living and it is happening to Buhari today. Such was the ruthless and cold-blooded deception that Yar’adua’s inner circle brought into the equation that they managed to convince the Nigerian people and indeed the entire world that a President that was totally comatose and literally brain-dead managed to sign the 2010 budget all the way from dream-land. They also managed to conjure up a fake but convincing telephone interview with the … television service which millions of unsuspecting viewers, including yours truly, watched and listened to from all over the world. Such was the angst of the management of the … when the truth was unearthed and they finally discovered that they had been misled, conned, duped and used that the northern Nigerian woman that organised the so-called “interview”, passing off Yar’adua’s brother’s voice as Yar’adua himself, was expeditiously and unceremoniously sacked. Her name was …. and she was the head of the … at the time. She was also a double agent of both the MI6, the United Kingdom’s secretive international spy agency and Nigeria’s external spy agency known as the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). One is constrained to ask: what have the Nigerian people not been subjected to or seen? All these dirty games conducted in a sqaulid and sordid attempt to hold on to power at all costs. Yet worse of all are the nauseating mendacities that the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, keeps churning out. Yesterday he told us that Buhari did not attend the FEC meeting this week because he was “still resting”. Equally amusing was the absurd assertion from the Minister of Transport, as Rotimi Amaechi, who claims that he “is not corrupt” and that he “does not like money” and who told Nigerians that Buhari was now “putting on weight”, was “much better” and that he was “fit enough to run for the Presidency in 2019”. Honestly one wonders if these creatures have any genuine love and compassion for their principal because if they did instead of telling us lies about his medical condition they would simply get on their knees and beg him to resign. One wonders if they have any shame. It is very clear to me that they are all under an accursed hex or Luciferean spell. They have been bound and blinded in body, spirit and soul. This is a classic case of the Living God hardening Pharaoh’s heart unto destruction. Yet sadly those in power, including Buhari himself, are so obsessed with that power that they cannot see it. Instead of letting God’s people go and bringing to an end the wickedness, persecution, slaughter and destruction of their perceived enemies, the Buhari administration has gone into full throttle and unleashed even more havoc on members of the opposition and those that they hate. A few examples will suffice. A couple of weeks ago when my younger brother Mr. Deji Adeyanju, the stormy petrel of Nigerian political activism, together with his equally dynamic colleague Mr. Ariyo Dare Atoye, organised protest marches across the country demanding for the release of the great Biafran leader and irrepressable Igbo nationalist Prince Nnamdi Kanu, they were both promptly arrested and briefly detained by the police. The same thing happened to them again in Abuja a few days later after they organised yet another demonstration, this time calling for the release of two online bloggers and journalists, Mr. Austin Okai and Miss Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo. It didn’t stop there. Two days ago the Southern Kaduna’s Peoples Union (SOKAPU) went on a march in Unity Square, Abuja protesting about the continued mass murder, genocide, butchering and ethnic cleansing of their Christian brothers and sisters and people by Buhari’s kinsmen, the Fulani militias and herdsmen. Amongst their ranks was the courageous, refreshing, young, articulate, brilliant and bright rising star of Nigeria’s Middle Belt zone, Miss Ndi Kato. Sadly instead of being treated with sensitivity and compassion and being given assurances that the killings would stop and the killers would be brought to justice, they were insulted, beaten, brutalised and dispersed with batons and tear gas by the Nigerian police. When elements of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group led by Mrs. Aisha Yesufu joined them as a mark of solidarity, they were brutalised and dispersed as well. Worse still Aliyu Babangida, the former Governor of Niger State, Sule Lamido, the former Governor of Jigawa state, Ibrahim El Zak Zaky, the leader of Nigeria’s Shiite Muslims, Sambo Dasuki, the former National Security Advisor to President Goodluck Jonathan and countless other opposition leaders and opponents of the government remain languishing in detention cells and prisons all over the country whilst plans are afoot to frame up and arrest numerous others like the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. This is clearly a government and a President of “no going back”. Like Shakespeare’s Macbeth they are “so far steeped in blood that should they wade no more, returning would be as tedious as to go over”. Yet the price for their chosen path, their sheer cruelty and callousness and their sanguine disposition is very high. It is not just a matter of Buhari possibly dying in office as a consequence of whatever it is that has afflicted him but also what the aftermath of his death will bring. Baba Bisi Akande, a leading member of the APC and one of the most reverred and credible figures in the country, has already fired a warning shot on behalf of the Vice President and the south-west by saying that nobody should mistake 2017 for 1993. For those that are too young to know what he is saying is that if Buhari dies no-one should dream of scuttling Professor Yemi Osinbajo’s succession and thereby deprive the south-west of the Presidency like they did in 1993 when Chief MKO Abiola’s mandate was annuled by the northern military simply because they did not want a southern President. This is a timely and useful intervention by Baba Akande but sadly it has fallen on deaf ears. The cabal and the ultra-conservative core north (which is the constituency that Buhari represents) has already made up its mind. As a matter of fact the spokesman of the Northern Patriotic Assembly issued a prompt response to him yesterday and warned him and other “leaders from the south-west” to desist from making what they described as “such immoral and despicable statements”. Again at the instance of the northern elders and leaders, the APC Youth Wing issued an even sterner warning and advised Akande to “go for a physchiatric test” for suggesting that the ill health of the President was taking its toll on the nation. As far as these people are concerned the Presidency of Nigeria belongs to the north and whether Buhari lives or dies, it must stay there. Worse still their view is that if they cannot have it then nobody will. That is the beastly mindset of those that we are contending with. And those that suffer from it will certainly come to an equally beastly end. The truth is that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and those that they represent …. They have been rejected by the Living God. His is a government of compulsive liars, sadistic tyrants, blood-thirsty pyschopaths, closet kleptomaniacs, ethnic supremacists, radical Islamists, skull and bone diviners and voodoo merchants. The fact of the matter is that whether they like it or not we are entering the end game. Everything is coming to a head. The next few months will be instructive and critical and much will happen that will surprise and shock the world and the Nigerian people. To the spiritually sensitive and discerning one thing is clear: this dispensation is almost over. The beast is dying. The flesh is rotting. The vultures are gathering. The sky has turned black and a new era approaches. Yet even in sickness, death and decay the tyrant and his followers revel in deception, treachery, doublespeak, blood-lust and wickedness. My advice to them is to humble themselves and FEAR GOD before it is too late! My counsel to them is to let this sick and elderly man resign in peace and allow him to go home to take care of his health and make his peace with God. My appeal to them is to be sensitive to the Spirit and to recognise the fact that he has been struck and mortally wounded by the sword of the Lord. My prayer to them is to accept the fact that he has been pierced with the arrow of God, he has been hit by the east wind of destruction, he has been afflicted with a deep spiritual wound and he is suffering from God’s judgement: it is time for him to GO!

BBC bosses say Sir Cliff Richard has spent "grossly unreasonable" amounts on lawyers after complaining about reports naming him as a suspected sex offender and taking legal action.
They say figures show the singer has already run up legal costs of more than £500,000 which are on "on any view ... disproportionate".
Lawyers representing the BBC made the criticism as a judge analysed the latest stage of the dispute at a High Court hearing in London on Thursday.
If Sir Cliff's claim succeeds, and he wins damages, the BBC could be ordered to pick up all his lawyers' bills.

BBC editors have said they will "defend ourselves vigorously".
"The claimant's budget shows pre-action costs of £525,437, including 1,287 hours of solicitors' time," Gavin Millar QC, who heads the BBC's legal team, told the judge in a written submission.
"Though not without its legal complexities, this case cannot have required extensive factual investigations on behalf of the claimant: the broadcasts are in the public domain."
He added: "On any view ... the claimant's incurred costs to date are grossly unreasonable and disproportionate."
Mr Millar said the judge should record "strong disapproval"."

Detail of Sir Cliff's claim emerged last year in paperwork lodged at the High Court by lawyers.
Mr Justice Mann is overseeing the latest in a series of preliminary hearings in London.
Sir Cliff was not at the hearing which is due to end on Friday.
He is suing the BBC  over reports naming him as a suspected sex offender and wants damages.
